Kooljaman - Cape Leveque

250km north of Broome at the tip of the Dampier Penninsula lies one of the most extraordinary pieces of paradise that few lucky people are able to see - Cape Leveque.

We camped at the Wilderness Lodge with the sun rising over the indian ocean in the morning and setting over the Indian Ocean in the evening - yes we really were on the tip.
Rugged red sandstone cliffs glow in contrast to the shell laded sandy beaches and deep saphire blue water. Get the idea!
The whole family went fishing for a few hours in a glass bottom boat. Fantastic fun and we all caught plenty - threw many back but came back with a feast to feed many.

Seeing the look on Tess' face as she moaned and groaned (and vomited) over the edge of the rocking boat, I doubt she will be rushing back!
Not happy!
Plenty of walks along the beach and swimming and we went down to One Arm Point to feed turtles and Barramundi in the local hatchery.
'Susan time' - relaxing with the beach to ourselves
There was a small restaurant at Kooljaman overlooking the beach as the sun sets - we had a magnificant feed of prawns, squid, kangaroo - now our favourite restaurant of all time but a shame it will be so hard to get back to again.
Collecting shells - a popular (and competitive) activity

Yesterday we did a heritage tour - met a local indigenous elder (Bundy) and the kids made their own spears (with a fair bit of help from mum and dad). We then drove out through the dunes to go fish hunting with our spears. The recently moustached Ray Brownhill says the sand was very soft and that is why he got stuck.
It was a bit of a debacle - otherwise known as local tourism! Everything worked on Bundy time and there was certainly no rush. Needless to say we didn't even see a fish let alone spear one but it was quite good fun and a genuine outback adventure. I am not sure what I am going to do with an 8ft spear that Daniel thinks is his though......
Kids are all a bit sick today so we are having a rest day in Derby before we set off on the Gibb River Road tomorrow. Conveniently it will also mean I can watch the Reds play their semifinal tonight at the local Derby Pub!
Happy birthday to Jennifer for last week and Catherine for today.

The next post may be a few weeks away

Hope everyone is well

  1. Dave great to get an update on your endeavours. The warm sunshine and beach surfing is definitely a tease while cooling our heals in melbourne. How is the prado and trailer traveling? Trust you travel safely. Love Andrew Julie and kids

  2. Afternoon David and Sue

So jealous sitting at my desk doing paperwork - what amazing photos - almost too goo to be true!
Looks like you are having an amazing time.
What timing you have to be giving up your reds season tickets!! Matt is lucky enough that I have swimming buddies with corporate tickets who keep inviting us both. As of Saturday night's clash though it has become a boys date :) Us wives are sent to dinner and a movie and the boys get to take a 'man date' to the footy. Had a great night with the reds success and heading off this weekend again - Matt can't believe his luck!! Will no doubt have a few for you :)
Looking forward to you next update

    Love Jac and Matt

  3. Hi David and sue and the tin lids... It is such fun following your intrepid travels from across the other side of the world! Your photos are excellent and gives us a great sense of the geography. One day Howard and I will have to head up there. Felt so sorry to hear Tess got seasick... Poor kid... I know how that feels! But you did well with your fishing! What a memorable trip...makes me realize what a lazy traveler I am! Hope you are having great fun... I know you are making wonderful memories. Lots of love from a hot and steamy new york city, helen xxx
