STOP 4 – CHARNLEY RIVER STATION

We had an early start the next morning to try and get to Mornington Wilderness Camp. They only let in 25 vehicles at any time and you cannot book in advance - you have to try your luck by calling in from a radio at the start of the 90km drive in off the main road. We were not in luck so made a last minute diversion to Charnley River Station. Not a disappointment at all.
Huge grassy camp site with plenty of big shady trees, peacocks and a few cows and only a few other travellers.

Charnley is a 750,000 acre station north of the Gibb River Road and is a mixture of wilderness conservation park and working cattle station.

We did a trip out to Grevillia Gorge and Lillie Ponds – 30km of dirt track north of the campsite. Fantastic and again we were the only ones there. You have to climb down through the stepped waterfall to get to the large swimming pool below. 2 hours of swimming and climbing through the spectacular gorge waterfalls with not another soul in sight. Hard to believe we can keep on being so lucky.

Fantastic weather, great camping, excellent food (Thanks to the tireless work of Susan!!) and good health for all. The 2 nights at Charnley were definitely 2 of the best!
