STOP 7 – EL QUESTRO

We have to admit to some mixed feelings about El Questro – the biggest name in Kimberley tourism. For the unaware it is a million acre station just west of Kununurra  straddling the mighty Pentecost River (which we had to drive through) and encompasses the entire Cockburn range within its borders.

It is fantastic!

Whilst it certainly has some of the features of high-end tourism it is not overdone and in fact we thoroughly enjoyed dinner at the Steakhouse on our last night there! There is certainly plenty to do and much of it requires a fair bit of work to get to – long walks through gorges clambering over massive boulders and up steep cliff faces as well as challenging 4WD tracks.

El Questro Gorge is probably the prettiest walk we have done all trip and also one of the most challenging. Thomas has been a bit sick so he and Susan stopped a bit after half way but Daniel and (surprisingly) Tess hopped, slipped and jumped for over 90 minutes to reach the beautiful waterfall and crystal clear swimming hole deep inside the gorge. Did I forget to mention we climbed up through waterfalls and along narrow gorge wall ledges. Certainly not a venue for pampered tourists! Yet again we (the Rosengrens, Wrights and Paoluccis) had the place to ourselves.

Zebedee Springs is the most popular destination. Thermal springs bubbling from deep within the earth a short walk in from the main track. A busload of ‘older Australians’ was leaving as we arrived and we were lucky to enjoy the springs in relative peace. The kids loved it.

We hired a small electric motor tinny and spent a morning cruising the magnificent Chamberlain Gorge which was a great break from the hot rock hopping treks. All the kids had a go driving the boat. No limbs lost to crocodiles!

Amalia Gorge was another fantastic walk ending in a 30+ metre waterfall which plunged into what is definitely the coldest water we have swum in all trip.

The drive out along the 4WD track to Explosion Gorge was indeed challenging but well rewarded with fantastic views along the spectacular gorge and the view from Branco’s lookout on the way home is indescribable.

El Questro really captured what we were expecting from the Kimberleys!
